We, clergy and religious leaders from across Ohio, in accordance with our moral convictions and our personal faith, support a person’s ability to access a full range of reproductive health services, including safe and legal abortion.

As leaders of various faith communities, we have ministered to thousands of women and their families. Many of these people find themselves faced with the decision to have an abortion, and one in four will decide to end a pregnancy at some point in their lives.

These women are our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends, and our peers. As people of faith and as Ohioans, we believe in loving our neighbors and treating one another as we would like to be treated — with compassion, dignity, and respect. This means recognizing that the decision to have an abortion is deeply personal and should be left to a woman, her family, and her doctor.

As such, the decision to have an abortion should not be restricted by elected officials. We also oppose the enshrinement of any faith strictures as public policy. We value real religious liberty, which upholds the right of each person to make their own faith- or conscience-based healthcare decisions.

We recognize there are a diversity of views in the faith community. Indeed, not everyone in our own congregations or denominations agrees on this complex issue. But as leaders, we are called to declare our support for a person's ability to access abortion, contraception, and other reproductive healthcare services.

Our religious principles are grounded in love and acceptance of all people, and we believe deeply that means ending the shame and stigma associated with abortion and increasing access for all people to access a full range of reproductive healthcare options.

It is time to #StopTheBans and end all attempts to interfere in private medical decisions about abortion, leaving them in the capable hands of women.
